Everybody knows that text-messaging while driving multiplies the risk of accidents. But do you know whether your people are texting while they drive on company business?
If you don’t, it would be a good idea to find out. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis has just announced that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be cracking down on texting at the wheel.
Solis said OSHA will investigate and potentially issue fines when it gets a credible complaint that an employer “requires texting while driving or … organizes work so that texting is a practical necessity.”
What you can do
Supervisors might want to:
- Review job descriptions to make sure none appears to require texting while driving, and
- Check whether any of your people feel they must text while driving to get their jobs done on time.
