Warning: Temps more likely to suffer injuries

Make sure supervisors pay particular attention to temporary workers – an Australian study shows temps are 50% more likely to get injured than permanent hires.

To target your training, consider strains and sprains, which were the most common injury in all age groups. Also target younger workers, those age 15 to 24 had “substantially” higher injury rates.

Possible causes of these results:

  • Temporary workers may be unfamiliar with working conditions that permanent workers take for granted.
  • They may be unfamiliar with the movements required or lack strength in specific muscle groups that more experienced workers have developed, and suffer ergonomic injuries such as strains and sprains. This is especially true if they must keep up with more experienced workers.
  • They may not receive as thorough a safety orientation or safety attention as permanent workers.
