5 ways to make sure training sinks in

Not sure your efforts at safety training are getting through to workers? Here are some suggestions:

1. Conduct training sessions at break time. People are more ready for safety training at certain times of the day than others. Leverage those times to your advantage.

For example, some supervisors hold training sessions after workers take their regular breaks or after lunch, such as at 10 a.m. or at 1 p.m. Workers are ready at those times for a change of routine, or not quite ready to get back to work. They may appreciate a short safety training session.

Steer clear of end-of-day meetings, though. People just want to clean up and go home.

2. Break meetings into manageable bites. If you have a choice between one long session and several short ones, opt for a series of short ones.

Workers may be more attentive ââ?¬” and thus learn more ââ?¬” from daily 10-minute reminders than they would at an hour-long-session.

3. Use humor. To keep boredom from setting in, use a dash of humor here or there to keep everyone involved and awake.

You don’t need to be a comedian, but sometimes starting a meeting with a single joke or funny story can get workers focused on the topic.

4. Give workers problems to solve in teams. Present small groups of workers (three or four to a team) with safety problems and ask them to brainstorm solutions.

Because this is hands-on training, they’re more likely to remember what they learned. It will also improve your workers’ ability to identify and correct hazards on their own.

5. Give a real-life example. Make an impact by sharing a real-life accident with your employees.

Discuss how a workplace injury affected someone you know. Or discuss how a recent workplace accident in the news could have been prevented.
