A construction worker in Waterloo, Iowa, was killed when a trench collapsed on her. Deea Lauritzen, 35, of Jesup, Iowa, was crushed to death. It took rescue workers three hours to dig her body out of the thick clay. The trench was nearly 10 feet deep at the area of collapse.

Lauritzen worked for Stickfort Construction of Waterloo, and was helping the company install a sanitary sewer line for a housing project. Rescuers installed a city-owned trench box prior to attempting a rescue.
