Another reason to lock out

Here is another reason to make sure workers lock out their machines before performing maintenance, clean jammed materials, or otherwise put themselves too close to powerful equipment and stored energy: A Detroit automobile manufacturer reported today that one of its workers was crushed to death on the job.

Details are sketchy at press time, but reports indicate that the worker was killed in a machine press during the first shift at the FCA US (formerly Chrysler) Jefferson North Assembly Plant. Rescuers were called to the scene, but the worker had already died.

Safety pros recognize this type of tragedy all-too-often, when workers get too close to operating equipment. OSHA will investigate and we’ll learn more about the exact causes of the accident when they release the results of their inquiry.
