Rapid Learning Institute CEO Stephen Meyer spoke at two events during the 2015 Association for Talent Development (ATD) International Conference. The event, which was held May 17th to the 20th in Orlando FL, was attended by more than 10,000 learning professionals.

Meyer first conducted a session entitled Brief is Beautiful: Bite-Size Content and The New E-Learning. During the hour-long presentation, he focused on the power of short, fast-paced e-learning modules to convey valuable insights, especially in soft-skills workplace training.

“Something big is happening right now in corporate e-learning,” Meyer said. “Forces like mobile-learning, the rise of Millennials, the shift in the way our brains absorb information due to the technology we use – it’s all converging and people’s thinking is changing.”

The three changes, or trends, Meyer sees on the horizon for soft-skills e-learning are: 1. Microlearning, or modules delivered in under 10 minutes; 2. Single-concept learning, or modules based on one concept intended to change one behavior and achieve one desired outcome; and 3. Coaching instead of training, where managers leverage e-learning to become coaches invested in their employees’ development.

Filled to capacity, the session was attended by over 300 training professionals.

Meyer was also invited by ATD to participate in a session on Learning Technologies with four other e-learning thought leaders. Each thought leader was asked to deliver a brief, high-level talk in their area of expertise. Meyer was asked to share his thoughts on microlearning, which he called, “a disruptive, even revolutionary alternative to traditional learning.”

The transformational power of bite-size learning, he said, is that it’s easily embedded in your workday. “You don’t leave your office to gain an insight,” said Meyer. “You can watch the module at your desk in just a few minutes. And the great thing about microlearning is that you can go apply it immediately.”

The ATD International Conference and Exposition is the largest conference in the field of training and development. It provides learning professionals with the ability to discover current and future trends from industry leaders and how to apply these ideas in their organizations.

Rapid Learning Institute (RLI) provides online training and talent development tools for businesses, government agencies, nonprofits and educational institutions in the areas of sales, leadership and management, human resources, employment law compliance, and workplace safety. RLI’s approach is founded on three core principles: 1) Rapid Learning. Workplace training should be delivered in short bursts – just six to 10 minutes at a time. Today’s multi-tasking workforce has neither the time nor the attention span for traditional lengthy training formats. 2) Single-Concept Learning. People learn best when training is focused on a narrow concept where learning goals are clearly defined. When training is delivered in small packets, the brain can easily absorb, remember and apply what it learns. 3) Research-Based Learning. Training is most powerful when it’s grounded in verifiable research. When learners see training as credible, they’re more likely to translate the learning into on-the-job behavior. RLI’s signature six to 10 minute modules, called Quick Takes, incorporate these three ideas into unique training programs that get results.

Based in Greater Philadelphia, RLI is an operating division of Business 21 Publishing.
