The multiple benefits of employee recognition

Many of the recent best business sellers, all talk about the need to do this in terms of defining what performance and expectations you have for people and then rewarding and recognizing them when they do it, they achieve it, they exhibit the kinds of behaviors that are part of your value system.

Appreciate what people are doing, not saying
We have to be able to tell able people we appreciate them doing that. And you’ll find this in many of the best sellers that are out there from First, Break All the Rules to Patrick Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of the Team to Larry Bossidy’s book on Execution to Jack Walters’ recent book on Winning. They all allude to the importance of recognizing and supporting people when they do the things we want them to do.

Reinforce culture
Employee recognition helps to reinforce your culture. So, if you have certain elements of your culture that are positive, values you want exhibited, things you want people to do and how they work with others, how they deal with customers and things that are negative that you don’t want them to do.

One of the best ways to incentivize those behaviors and get rid of the dysfunctional behaviors is to give non-monetary rewards and employee recognition when people align themselves with what you want as a culture.

Now, this presupposes you know what your culture is.

Many of the organizations I deal with could not define what their culture is today, what they want it to be in the future and the path of how they wanted to get there.

Now, that can be a whole different workshop. But suffice it to say, it reinforces the culture you’re trying to exhibit or you want to put in place.

Personal value of employee recognition
And then finally, we spend more time at work than we do with our families. It’s a big part of our life. Many people find that a tremendous amount — next to their family, a tremendous amount of their value, of their self-worth comes from what they do on the job. And there’s lots of stress and pain, sometimes things don’t go right.

And a good program of non-monetary rewards and employee recognition reinforces all those different pieces we just talked about
