Misguided diversity effort boomerangs

We’re not saying you shouldn’t ever undertake any diversity initiatives. But we are saying: Don’t let your diversity efforts make things worse.

That’s what Target Corp. did at its warehouse in Woodland, CA.

Multicultural ‘tips’
Three Hispanic employees sued Target for racial discrimination, and one of their complaints was that the multicultural tips for managers the employer issued were themselves racist.

The document instructed managers to note differences among Hispanic workers, giving this list:

“a. Food: not everyone eats tacos and burritos;
“b. Music: not everyone dances to salsa;
“c. Dress: not everyone wears a sombrero;
“d. Mexicans (lower education level, some may be undocumented);
“e. Cubans (Political refugees, legal status, higher education level); and
“f. They may say ‘OK, OK’ and pretend to understand, when they do not, just to save face.”

Target later apologized and said the document wasn’t part of any company-wide training. We certainly hope not …
