Employee retention: Virtues of the ‘how’s it going?’ interview

by on March 21, 2011 · 0 Comment POSTED IN: HR Cafe

We interview people when we hire them. We interview them when we evaluate them. And we often interview them when they decide to leave.

But do you interview people who are just plain old sticking around?

There are lots of good reasons to hold what some HR gurus call “stay interviews.” They let you assess morale among your key people, strengthen your bond with them, and judge what’s working and what’s not in management.

Here are some questions to ask:

  • Why do you stay with us?
  • What do you like best/least?
  • Has something caused you to consider leaving in the last six months? Has it been resolved?
  • What one thing would you like to see changed?
  • What’s your dream job, and what can we do to support your progress toward it?
  • Is there one person here who has really been helpful to you lately, so we can thank them?
