Give negative feedback without creating negative feelings

Nobody likes being criticized by the boss. But properly given, negative feedback can have positive results.

On the other hand, botching the delivery of negative feedback can have lasting effects by creating hard feelings or fueling a lawsuit against the company.

To make sure the talk doesn’t take a bad turn, make sure you and/or your line managers:

  • Pick the right time and place. Never give constructive criticism in front of an audience, or when you or the employee are pressed for time.
  • Cut to the chase. Keep the meeting on track by getting to the point and focusing only on the problem.
  • Give the employee an opportunity to be heard. Let the person respond and ask questions. Be ready for an emotional response.
  • Set clear expectations. Explain how you want the situation resolved.
