Be ready for the aggressive games that smart candidates may play

In a tough employment market for job-seekers, people are getting pretty savvy about selling themselves to you in the hiring interview.

Here are some of the sharp, aggressive ploys your candidate may use during or at the close of the interview. Be ready to respond:

  • “Two days ago another organization made me an offer. But I’m glad I had this talk with you, and I’d rather work here. When do you expect to make a decision? The other employer wants to hear from me by the end of the week.”
  • “I’d be willing to do the job on a trial basis for a few weeks if that would make the hiring decision easier for you. How about you hire me for a probationary period so you can see how I perform?”
  • “Your organization is clearly the leader in your field, and I’m a person who always strives to be the best I can be. I believe we’re a perfect match. What do you think?”
